i) This is because the cell loses water by osmosis since it is in a Hypertonic solution

ii) Potato A is necessary for finding the differences

iii) In potato A there is no water so there won't be any observation, in Potato D The cell will gain water by osmosis since it is in hypotonic solution

i) Since sugar and salt was present in B and C respectively (indicating that the concentration of water is low in this area), water from outside gathered in this hollowed portion of the potato by the process of osmosis.

ii) Potato A is important because it helps us understand what changes has occurred. It acts like a calibration reference.

iii) Water does not gather in the hollowed portion of potato A as it was empty. Water also does not gather in the cup D because the potato used was boiled which makes it inactive (as boiling ruptures the cell membrane).
