QUESTION:

The difference between two numbers is 72 and the quotient obtained by dividing one by the other is 3. Find the numbers.

ANSWER:

  • The numbers are 36, 108.

GIVEN:

  • The difference between two numbers is 72.

  • The quotient obtained by dividing one number by the other is 3.

TO FIND:

  • The two numbers.

EXPLANATION:

Let the greater number be x and the smaller number be y.

x - y = 72

x/y = 3

This is because only if larger number on divding by the smaller number gives 3.

x = 3y

Substitute x = 3y in x - y = 72

3y - y = 72

2y = 72

y = 36

Substitute y = 36 in x - y = 72

x - 36 = 72

x = 108.

HENCE THE NUMBERS ARE 36, 108.

VERIFICATION:

Substitute y = 36 and x = 108 in x/y = 3

108 / 36 = 3

54 / 18 = 3

9 / 3 = 3

3 = 3

HENCE VERIFIED.
