Acceleration of the mass 8 kg downwards = a m/s²
Acceleration of masses P and Q upwards = a m/s² (the strings are tight)
Let the tension in the string between 5kg and 8 kg = T1.
Tension in the string between 5 kg and 2 kg = T2.
Equations of motion are..
8 g - T1 = 8 a
T1 - 5 g - T2 = 5 a
T2 - 2 g = 2 a
Add all the equations to get: g = 15 a
a = g/15
