solution

Let the original strength be x so,

we get,

strength of first year = 30 % of x = 0.3x

total strength of first year = 1.3x

again,

Strength of 2nd year = 13% of 1.3x = 0.13x

total strength of now = 1.3x - 0.13x = 1.17x

total strength of now = 1404

or, 1.17x = 1404

or, x = 1404/1.17

Therefore, the original strength of the school was 1200.
