To reduce the time he would have to increase heat produced to do so he changes the length of the heating element.
We know that the H=I^2×R×t i.e resistance is directly proportional to the heat produced so an increase in resistance will result in increase in heat .
Also R=rho×L/A i.e resistance is directly proportional to the length.
So an increse in length will reult in increase of heat produced.
