x = 31 - y ___________( 1 )

Also,

3 years ago,

( x - 3 ) = 4 ( y - 3 )

On solving further, we get

x - 3 = 4y - 12

x - 4y = - 12 + 3

x - 4y = - 9

( 31 - y ) - 4y = - 9 [ Using ( 1 ) ]

31 - 5y = - 9

5y = 31 + 9

5y = 40

y = 8

Put this in ( 1 ), we get

x = 31 - 8

x = 23

Hence,

Ram's age = 23 years

Raju's age = 8 years
