QUESTION :

A sheet of mass 20g is kept floating horizontally In air by firing bullets, each of mass 5g, with the same velocity, at the rate of 10 bullets per second and the bullets rebound with the same speed in opposite directions. The velocity of each bullet at the time of impact is ( Take 'g' = 10 m s^-2 )

(a) 2 m s-¹

(b) 5 m s-¹

(c) 10 m s-¹

(d) 100 m s-¹

GIVEN :

  • Mass of a given sheet = 20g
  • Mass of firing bullets = 5g
  • Given velocity at the rate = 10 Bullets

TO FIND :

  • The velocity of each bullet at the time of impact = ?

STEP -BY-STEP EXPLAINATION :

Needed information :

➠ Inital momentum = mv (↑)

➠ Final momentum = mv (↓)

→ Initial momentum – Final momentum

→ mv – mv

-2 mv

We got here, change in momentum as -2mv

➠ Rate of 10 bullets = 10 × (change in momentum)

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ⟹ 10 × (-2mv) / Second

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ⟹ -20 mv

Upward (↑) Force = Rate in change of momentum = -20mv ( GIVEN )

→ 20mv = mg

(Substituting the values as per the given formula)

➠ 20×5×V / 1000 = 20 / 1000 =

(v= 2 m/s)

Therefore, wct of each bullet at the time of impact is 2 metre per second (2 m/s)
