Square both equations and add them

(p-q)² = p²+q²-2pq

(p+q)²= p²+ q²+ 2pq

(p-q)² + (p+q)² = 2(p²+q²)

6²+14² = 2(p²+q²)

p²+q² = 232/2 = 116
