we know that current in series is same across the resistors
thus, current through R1 will be equal to current through R2
I1 = I2
V1/R1 = V2/R2
6/R = 12/6
R = 3 ohm.
and reading in ammeter = V1/R1 = 6/3 = 2 A
total potential across battery is what the total algebric sum of voltages it given to resistances in series. Thus, V(total) = V1 + V2 = 6 + 12 = 18 v
