We know that the slope of a velocity - time graph gives us the acceleration
Because, Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity per unit time
Simply mathematically,
a = dv/dt
So, wherever the slope is positive , the motion will be called accelerated.
a) The motion from 0 to 4 seconds is accelerated here because the slope of the graph is positive.
b) The motion from 10 to 14 seconds is decelerated here because the slope of the graph is negative.
c) The distance travelled by the body in first 4 seconds will be the area under the graph of first four seconds , I.e the first triangle.
So, distance= 1/2*4*4 = 8 metres.
If we want to calculate the total distance then we can simply find out the area of each shape individually here and then add them up to get the total distance travelled.
