2x^2 + 6x - 8 = 0
Divide by 2
x^2 + 3x - 4 = 0
x^2 + 4x - x - 4 = 0
x(x+4)-1(x+4)=0
(x-1)(x+4)=0
x=1 or -4
sum = 1 - 4 = -3
