1. There is mainly two social groups in Sri Lanka, the Sinhala speakers and Tamil speaker. The Sinhala speaking people constitute about 74 % population and Tamil speaking people constitute 13 % of population. Tamil speakers can be further divided into Indian Tamils and Sri Lankan Tamils.
2. Majoritarianism is a traditional political philosophy or agenda that asserts that a majority (sometimes categorized by religion, language, social class, or some other identifying factor) of the population is entitled to a certain degree of primacy in society, and has the right to make decisions that affect the society.
3. Power sharing signifies the sharing or dividing of power within the country among different religious and cultural communities in order to prevent disputes on social or political lines and so that all are treated equally and the goal of democracy is achieved.
4. An ethnic group or ethnicity is a category of people who identify with each other, usually on the basis of presumed similarities such as common language, ancestry, history, society, culture, nation or social treatment within their residing area.
5. 33 of 1956. The act established Sinhalese as official language of Sri Lanka and thus replaced the English. It established the supremacy of Sinhalese in Sri Lanka and failed to give official recognition to Tamil. The act later became one of the causes of enmity between the Sinhalese and Tamils.
