HOLA friend!!
Rajdeep here......
The pungent smelling gas [A] is Ammonia gas (NH₃), which is colourless.
When ammonia is oxidized, it produces colourless gas Nitrogen and water. Hence, [B], the colourless gas is Nitrogen.
Reaction:
4NH₃ + 3O₂ ------> 2N₂ + 6H₂O
Nitrogen [B], when oxidized, the colourless and odourless gas produced is Nitric oxide. Hence, [C] is Nitric Oxide.
Reaction:
N₂ + O₂ --------> 2NO
[Note that the reaction takes place at high temperature because a nitrogen molecule contains two nitrogen atoms linked with strong triple bond, which can only be broken in high temperatures].
Now, given, that gas [C], i.e., Nitric oxide is also formed by catalytic oxidation of ammonia (Gas [A]).
The catalyst [D] is Platinum, and the high temperature is 800°C.
Reaction:
4NH₃ + 5O₂ ----Pt-----> 4NO + 6H₂O
Now, gas [C], or Nitric oxide, on further oxidation, produces a coloured gas [E]. Gas [E] is Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), which is brown in colour.
Reaction:
2NO + O₂ -----> 2NO₂
Nitrogen dioxide gas is called as diacidic anhydride, i.e., when it is dissolved in water, it gives two acids ([F] and [G]). The two acids are Nitrous Acid (HNO₂) and Nitric Acid (HNO₃).
Reaction:
2NO₂ + H₂O -----> HNO₂ + HNO₃
Thus, let me make a list of substances [A] to [G].:
[A] = Ammonia gas (NH₃)
[B] = Nitrogen (N₂)
[C] = Nitric oxide (NO)
[D] = Platinum (Pt)
[E] = Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)
[F] = Nitrous acid (HNO₂)
[G] = Nitric acid (HNO₃)
Reactions are stated.
Hope my answer is satisfactory.....
Thanks!!(^_^)
