• Given : x - 1/x = 7
• To find : x⁴ + 1/x⁴ = ?

We have ;

x - 1/x = 7

Now ,

Squaring both the sides , we have ;

=> (x - 1/x)² = 7²

=> x² + (1/x)² - 2•x•(1/x) = 49

=> x² + 1/x² - 2 = 49

=> x² + 1/x² = 49 + 2

=> x² + 1/x² = 51

Again ,

Squaring both the sides , we have;

=> (x² + 1/x²)² = 51²

=> (x²)² + (1/x²)² + 2•x²•(1/x²) = 2601

=> x⁴ + 1/x⁴ + 2 = 2601

=> x⁴ + 1/x⁴ = 2601 - 2

=> x⁴ + 1/x⁴ = 2599

Hence ,

x⁴ + 1/x⁴ = 2599 .
