Answer

Option c

v = 8.85 m/s

Given

A car is moving on a bend without skidding , If radius of bend is 20 m and coefficient of friction b/w road and the tyres is 0.4 ( g = 10 m/s² )

To Find

The maximum speed with which car turn successfully with out skidding

Concept Used

Centripetal force causing the car to turn in a circular turn is due to frictional force between tyres and road . A minimum value of coefficient of friction is needed for car or else car will skids easily .

When there is no skid in a circular turn ,

Centripetal force = Frictional force

\rm \to\ \dfrac{mv^2}{r}=\mu N\\\\\rm \to\ \dfrac{mv^2}{r}=\mu mg\ \;[\; \because\ N=mg ]\\\\\rm \to\ v^2=\mu rg\\\\\rm \to\ v=\sqrt{\mu rg}\ \; \bigstar

where ,

v denotes velocity of the car

μ denotes coefficient of friction

r denotes radius of the circular path

g denotes acceleration due to gravity

Solution

Radius of the circular path , r = 20 m

Coefficient of friction , μ = 0.4

Acceleration due to gravity , g = 9.8 m/s²

Max. speed of the car , v = ? m/s

Apply formula ,

\rm \to\ v=\sqrt{\mu rg}\\\\\rm \to\ v=\sqrt{0.4\times 20\times 9.8}\\\\\rm \to\ v=\sqrt{8\times 9.8}\\\\\rm \to\ v=\sqrt{78.4}\\\\\rm \to\ v=8.85\ m/s

So , max. speed with which a car run on a bend is 8.85 m/s
