6 \frac{3}{4}  =  \frac{6 \times 4 + 3}{4}  =  \frac{27}{4}

Let the number be added be x,

x +  \frac{27}{4}  = 9 \\  \\ x = 9 -  \frac{27}{4} \\  \\ x =  \frac{36}{4}  -  \frac{27}{4}  \\ x =  \frac{9}{4}

The number that should be added is 9/4.
