let x no: be cows and y no: be hens,

now, as hens have two legs and cows have 4,

so, 4x+2y= 128                                 and,       x+y=40⇒y=40-x

substituting y in 1 equation,

4x + 2(40-x) = 128

4x + 80 -2x = 128

2x = 48⇒x=24

SUBSTITUTING X IN Y=40-X

⇒y=40-24 = y=16

∴THERE ARE 24 COWS AND 16 HENS
