let side of inner square be b
and the diagonal of inner square = diameter of circle = d
using pythagoras theorem
d^2 = b^2 + b^2
d^2 = 2b^2
d^2/2 = b^2

area of inner square = side^2 = b^2 = d^2/2

diameter of circle = side of outer square = d

area of outer square = side^2 = d^2

ratio of areas :-
ar (inner square)/ar (outer square)
= (d^2/2)/ d^2
= 1/2
Ans. the ratio is 1 : 2
