There are many Indian handloom products that are in demand, in India and abroad. However, there is no aggregated data on which product sells more. In fact, when government stopped applying HS Classification for Indian handloom products, I did lobbying and advocacy for its restoration. Thus, data on Indian handloom exports for a period of five years in not available, in the previous decade.
Within Indian handloom products, there are many high value products, whose sales appear good on volumes. However, there are other products, including bedsheets, towels and lungis, which are low prices, but have high volumes. In terms of range, ikkat has application in many products, including sarees, dress materials, furnishing, etc., and as such scores over many other Indian handloom products.
Wool, silk and cotton handloom products have high demand and low support from government. And, there lies the problem.
