Question:

Solve to find x

(a) \frac{x + 3}{1 - x} = \frac{-9}{x}

Solution:

\frac{x + 3}{1 - x} = \frac{-9}{x}

x(x + 3) = -9(1-x)

x^{2}  + 3x = -9 + 9x

x^{2}  + 3x -9x +9 = 0

x^{2}  -6x +9 = 0

Apply splitting the middle term

x^{2}  -3x -3x +9 = 0

x(x  - 3) -3(x -3) = 0

(x-3)(x-3) = 0

The quadratic equation formed has two roots which are same.

x - 3 = 0

x = 3

The value of x is 3
