Imagine you are standing at some distance from a mountain and u shouted.
let the distance between you and the mountain be d.
It will take some time t for the sound to strike the mountain and come back.
The formula for Speed=distance/time
Let the speed of sound be V.
V=2d/t.
You can measure the time t using stopwatch.

speed of sound can be determine by...
there is a device which mesure it.
so suppose you are standing 100m away from a big wall and you produce a sound then the sound will go and get reflect from the big wall and will return to you.
so you have to mesure the time period between the Ray of incedence and Ray of refelection.
suppose the sound came back to you after 2 min
since we know that speed = distance / speed
so speed of sound = 100m / 120 sec
i.e. 5/6 = 1.2 m/sec
