Question:

  • 5\dfrac{1}{4}\div2\dfrac{4}{5}

Process:

To get the answers of the above question we first have to convert each fraction into improper fraction. After that, we will write the reciprocal of the second fraction and change the divide sign(÷) by multiply sign(×). After solving this multiplication we will get the answer.

Solution:

=5\dfrac{1}{4}\:\div\:2\dfrac{4}{5}

=\dfrac{21}{4}\:\div\:\dfrac{14}{5}

=\dfrac{21}{4}\:\times\:\dfrac{5}{14}

=\dfrac{3}{4}\:\times\:\dfrac{5}{2}

=\dfrac{15}{8}

=1\dfrac{7}{8}

Extra Information:

  • To convert a mixed fraction (say, c\dfrac{a}{b}) we have to multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the value of numerator to it. So the numerator of the fraction will be: (c × b) + a. And the denominator will be same which was earlier. Hence, denominator will be: b. So, if we convert c\dfrac{a}{b} to improper fraction, we will get : \dfrac{(c\times b)+a}{b}
  • Fraction is a number which is in the form of \dfrac{a}{b}, where a and b are natural numbers.

Eg- \dfrac{1}{2}, \: \dfrac{6}{5}

  • There are eight types of fractions. They are:
  1. Proper Fractions are fractions \dfrac{a}{b}, where a < b.
  2. Improper Fractions are fractions \dfrac{a}{b}, where a > b.
  3. Mixed Fractions are combination of whole number and proper fraction.
  4. Decimal Fractions are fractions whose denominator is 10^n, where n > 1.
  5. Fractions except decimal are called Valgur Fractions.
  6. Like Fractions are fractions having same denominators.
  7. Unlike Fractions are fractions having different denominators.
  8. Unit Fractions are fractions having 1 as numerator.
