Given:-

CC_{2} H_{6}(g) = 2C(s)+3H_{2}(g)           ΔH=31kJ/mol

Therefore,

2C(s)+3H_{2}(g)=C_{2} H_{6}(g)          ΔH=−31kJ/mol

As we know that the heat of formation is the same as the heat of reaction when one mole of the product is formed.

Hence the heat of formation of ethane is −31kJ/mol.
