Don't confuse acceleration and velocity. Acceleration is the change in velocity. It changes when velocity changes, and velocity changes with change in direction.

OK, so the sun does have an effect on the earth right??

Yes, without the sun's gravitational pull, the trajectory of the earth would be straight! No orbitting!

So, technically, the earth is falling towards the sun little by little , which changes it's trajectory in such a manner that it forms an 'orbit'
