let the total distance travelled by them be 'd' km.
first case:

speed on plane ground = 4km/hr
speed up the hill = 3km/ hr
since we know ,
average speed = 2xy/ x + y
avg. speed s1 ( ground +up)
= 2 × 4 × 3/ (4 + 3) = 24/ 7 km/ hr
second case:

speed down the hill = 6km/ hr
avg. speed s2( ground + down)
= 2 × 4 × 6 / (4 + 6) = 48/ 10
= 24/ 5 km/ hr
total time taken during the whole journey (6 a.m to 12 p.m )
= 6 hr
time = distance/ speed
time taken = (d/ s1) + (d/ s2)
6 = (d/ 24/ 7) + (d/ 24/ 5)
6 = 1/ 24 (7d + 5d)
12d = 144 => d = 12km
