Each culture, with the passage of centuries, accumulates cultural heritage of varying proportions. It becomes the responsibility of each new generation to understand, preserve and hand down to the next generation its cultural heritage. It is perhaps with this broader picture in mind, of saving the planet’s ancient cultural heritage around the world that UNESCO observes 18th April as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, popularly known as the Heritage Day.
Staford School believes in doing its bit to inculcate in the present generation, the young denizens of this world, an awareness and appreciation of the social, cultural, historical and natural heritage that we as Indians have inherited from our forefathers and what our planet has inherited collectively in its cultural history. One attempt of focusing the attention of the children on this rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry of India, was through an inter-house collage making competition, held in Staford School on 19th April 2014.
Collage making is an art involving the amalgamation of different materials like newspaper, photos, fabric, cut outs etc and attaching them to a background using glue. In a 3D collage, objects such as rocks, beads, buttons, coins or even soil is used to form an object.
This week, young Stafordians spent some time delving into the past and collecting pictures pertaining to the historical and cultural heritage of India to come up with a creative collage expressing their perspective on protecting our heritage. In the competition that was held on 19th April, students from classes 3 to 7 took part. The competition was open to two groups- senior group comprising
of class 5, 6 and 7 and the junior group consisting of classes 3 and 4.
The Theme was National Heritage which included protection of natural Heritage such as mountains, coastal areas, rivers, and wildlife; Historic Heritage-which referred to the preservation of monuments and ancient cities and cultural Heritage, which focused on the developing the awareness of culture specific dresses, food items, and shelters.
The art and craft teacher Ms. Towheed was in-charge of this hour long activity, which was overseen by the house in-charges, Ms Shailja Joshi, Mr. Shiraz Saeed, and Mr. Nirbhay Dave. The event was judged by our respected principal ma’am Ms. Vijaya Kumar and the craft teacher Ms. Towheed.
