Let the number of votes polled be x.

Given that winning candidate won with 82% votes.

Therefore, he got 82/100x number of votes.

Then, the rival got 18/100x votes.

Also given that winning candidate won by 576 more votes.

Therefore, 18/100x + 576 = 82/100x

18/100x*100/82x = -576

9/41x = -576

x = -576*41/9

x = 64*41

x = 2624

Answer : The total number of votes polled is 2624
