Explanation:

Given :-

  • On heating blue coloured powder of cupric nitrate in a boiling tube, copper oxide (black), oxygen gas and a brown gas X is formed.

To Find :-

  1. Write a balanced chemical equation of the reaction
  2. Identify the brown gas X evolved and the type of reaction.
  3. What could be the pH range of aqueous solution of gas X.

Solution :-

1)

When blue coloured powder of cupric nitrate is heated in a boiling tube, copper oxide (black), oxygen gas and nitrogen dioxide gas is produced.

Chemical equation :-

2Cu(NO3)2 → 2CuO + 4NO2 + O2

2)

X is Nitrogen dioxide (brown coloured gas)

This is the type of Decomposition reaction.

3)

pH range of aqueous solution of NO2 (Gas X) is less than 7 (acidic).
