Question :-

5  \cfrac{2}{7}  + 3\dfrac{1}{2}

Aim :-

  • To add all the terms

Let us first convert the mixed fractions to improper fractions.

 \cfrac{37}{7}  +  \dfrac{7}{2}

The terms are unlike. In order to add them we have to take the LCM (LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE) of the denominators.

LCM of 2,7 = 14

We have to multiply a factor with the numerator and denominator of the fractions so that the denominator is 14 for both the fractions.

 \dfrac{37 \times 2}{ 7\times 2}  +  \dfrac{7 \times 7}{2 \times 7}

 \dfrac{74}{14}  +  \dfrac{49}{14}

Now that the denominators are the same we have to add them.

 \dfrac{74 + 49}{14}

 =  \dfrac{123}{14}

We have to convert the answer to mixed fraction.

 = 8 \dfrac{11}{14}

Hope it helps!

Happy day!
