ex-officio positions are one which you are not directly elected for but you get the powers to because of some other status or position.

For example.. Vice President is ex-officio chairman of Rajya Sabha..means Vice President is not specially elected to be the Chairman of Rajya Sabha..but he gets that position as an additional power because of his vice-presidency status.
