Delhi Sultanate, refers to the various Muslim dynasties that ruled in India (1210–1526). It was founded after Muhammad of Ghor defeated Prithvi Raj and captured Delhi in 1192.
The Delhi Sultanate was a Muslim sultanate based mostly in Delhi that stretched over large parts of the Indian subcontinent for 320 years (1206–1526).Five dynasties ruled over the Delhi Sultanate sequentially: the Mamluk dynasty (1206–90), the Khalji dynasty (1290–1320), the Tughlaq dynasty (1320–1414),the Sayyid dynasty (1414–51), and the Lodi dynasty (1451–1526)
The Delhi Sultanate is important because it started the Muslim Rule in India. Before that, it was the Rajputs under Prithiviraj Chauhan who ruled over Delhi and the surrounding areas. The start of Muslim rule brought in great cultural diversity which became an importantand invaluable feature of our country.
