I am about to give you some advice I received about math tests which made them much less stressful. It is a test-taking strategy designed to limit your stress and maximize the amount of information you can get correct given the amount of time you have. So, here it goes:

The first thing you do when you sit down and open the test is read every problem, but do not attempt to solve any of them. Do not even think about how to solve them. Just look at the problems. This way, you know what you are going to have to do without getting anxious.

The next thing you do is take several deep breaths, relax, and remind yourself it is only a math test. This is to reduce your anxiety and to focus your mind. You will not perform well on mathematics exams if you are stressed, so it helps to remind yourself that in the grand scheme of things, one math test won't kill you. You need to approach the problems with a relaxed demeanor.

Next, go through the exam and only solve every problem that you know how to do. If you do not immediately know how to solve a problem, SKIP IT! The problems you know are the problems you are going to get the most points on. It is not efficient to waste time trying problems you do not know how to do when you could be spending time doing problems you can get points on. Also doing the problems you know how to do first will get your math brain going and give you confidence. This will help keep you relaxed and improve your performance on the test.

After you complete that, repeat step 2. Relax and take a deep breath. Think to yourself "I am glad that's over." Keeping yourself relaxed is important.

Then, for the remainder of the time, try to solve the problems you skipped before. That way, you can make up for the points allocated to problems you are not so sure on. Do not pressure yourself to get them right. Since you have already completed the problems you know, you will know that if you cannot get these problems, you already completed a good portion of the test. Try different methods to solve the problems, and if nothing seems to work, move onto another one.

Finally, if you have time and you have solved every problem once, try to go through the exam and solve as many as you can a second time. This will go a lot faster than your first run through because hopefully you know how to solve the problems. This way, you can check for mistakes.

Hope this strategy helps, I learned it in high school and I still use it today (I am about to graduate college with a math degree). Good luck!
