Light is a transverse wave requiring no transmission medium: can be inferred as moving fine through a perfect vacuum. I say inferred because nothing is observable except in interaction: you can’t directly observe light moving through a perfect vacuum: it’s not interacting with anything. I won’t go into all the possibilities for light waves passing through materials, except to mention plasma waves can include a longitudinal component.

Maxwell’s equations for electromagnetism are linear. As far as I know nonlinear interactions haven’t been observed so far, but quantum electrodynamics predicts nonlinear effects at extreme energy densities.

Light waves are electromagnetic waves while sound waves are mechanical waves.
