The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education is the West Bengal State Government administered autonomous examining authority for the Standard 12 examination of West Bengal. The council was established through the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, Act 1975 to regulate the educational system at 10+2 level. The examination for the 12th standard is called the Uchyaa Madhyamik or Higher Secondary examination. The Higher Secondary examination is conducted annually and simultaneously all over the state of West Bengal and also in affiliates of the board located outside West Bengal, elsewhere in India. It has its headquarters at Vidyasagar Bhavan, Salt Lake City, in Kolkata, India. It has three other offices at Bidhannagar, Karunamoyee, Kolkata along with other four regional offices. Academics

The Higher Secondary course consists of two parts; Class XI and Class XII. The academic session for class XI starts from June every year and the academic session for class XII starts from May every year.

Eligibility Criteria

The students need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria for admissions to WBSCHE.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission to Class XI

Candidates qualifying the Madhyamik Pariksha conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent Boards / Councils are eligible to be admitted into class XI within 3 months from the date of publication of result or 31st August of the year whichever is earlier. The Council reserves the right to extend the date under special circumstances.

Candidates who have passed the final examination conducted by a Secondary / Higher Secondary Board or authority other than the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, are also eligible for admission into class XI within 3 months from the date of publication of result or 31st August of the year whichever is earlier on the basis of equivalence with the Madhyamik Pariksha conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. The Council reserves the right to refuse any such admission if on scrutiny it is not satisfied with the equivalence. Such scrutiny shall be made on (i) Regular Course of studies, (ii) Subject Package, (iii) Total Marking Weightage, (iv) The Syllabus followed, and such other norms and factors as the Admission Committee shall deem necessary to consider. Such students must submit original migration certificate at the time of registration with the Council.

The students passing Class – X even from the specified Boards/authorities without Science subjects (Physical Science, Biological Sciences or their equivalent) and Mathematics subjects are not eligible to take admission in Class – XI under West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.

Admission of a student on the basis of Transfer Certificate may be allowed within 30th November of the year in which a student is in Class XI with the same subjects. Head of the Institution issuing transfer certificate must issue certificates showing the percentage of attendance in Classes XI subject-wise and also state if the candidate applied for Registration or not.

The following table shows the minimum percentage of marks that a student must obtain at the qualifying examination viz. the Madhyamik Pariksha or its equivalent in the corresponding subjects to be eligible to take the following elective subjects at the Higher Secondary level:
