I hope you are well acquainted with the concept of a cell and also that of osmosis.

Plant cells have these sacs, called vacuoles. In these vacuoles they store their excess water in form of a liquid called cell sap. This cell sap contains variable amounts of food and waste materials, inorganic salts, and nitrogenous compounds. This plant cell is placed in a solution that is more concentrated with solute than the sap. For easy understanding you can imagine that the vacuole in the cell contains sugar solution made by dissolving one spoonful of sugar in one glass of water, while the solution the cell is placed in is also sugar solution but it has been made by dissolving TEN SPOONFULS of sugar in one glass of water. You must have observed that the solution outside the cell has more sugar than the solution inside the cell. Now, due to difference in concentration and the presence of a semipermeable membrane that is the plasma membrane or cell membrane, osmosis occurs, or to be specific, exosmosis occurs as the concentration of the solution outside the cell is more than that of the solution in the vacuole. When the difference between the concentration of surrounding solution and cell sap is very high, nearly all the water is drained from the cell into the surrounding solution causing the cell to become shrunken. The cell is now called a plasmolysed cell.

Answer:

Plasmolysis is the contraction of protoplast of the plant as a result of water loss through osmosis.
