Snake Catcher’, is the tale of a man, who cut off from his familiar terrains, finds himself a companion of a skilled snake catcher ‘Maar-geer’. The story probes the limits of knowledge, the ever-shifting boundary between knowledge and ignorance and the failure of all knowledge in face of the divine scheme of things. The protagonist of the story ‘Resting Place’ is again the one who has ‘been wandering around’ (p. 86). Later, he gives up his wanderings and settles in a house at the behest of its owner who was impressed with his knowledge of the wild plants. It is only when a patient comes to stay in the house as a guest accompanied by his nurse that the protagonist has his moment of epiphany: ‘I realized that my speech was a shortcoming and that the patient was traveling far ahead of me on a road I knew nothing about’(p. 99). Thereafter, he realizes the inevitable onslaught of death and in moments of despair his resting place feels like a grave to him.
