The motion of a body in a plane is known as two dimensional motion. An ant moving in a plane. surface is an example of two dimensional motion.

To find:

expression for X and Y components.

so first we have to draw a figure for this,

I have attached it;)

The first figure represents the vector form

as.

And the second one represents the magnitude of the vector A and it's X and Y components.

From that on taking

 \cos(thetta)

we get,

cos (thetta) = Ax/A

where,

Ax is the X component.

so,

we can say,

Ax = Acos(thetta) from that...

Now on taking sin(thetta) from the same triangle,

we get,

sin(thetta) = Ay/A

where,

Ay is the Y component.

so, we can say,

Ay = Asin(thetta) from that

Hence

X component, Ax = Acos(thetta)

Y component, Ay = Asin(thetta)

Given:

  • P vector = 2i + 4j
  • Q vector = 3i - j

(a) P vector + Q vector

To add two vectors, add the x and y component of each vectors together,

so here it becomes,

P vector + Q vector = (2i + 3i) + (4j + (-j)

P vector + Q vector = 5i + 3j

(b) P vector - 2Q vector

P vector - 2Q vector = (2i + 4j) - 2(3i - j)

P vector - 2Q vector = (2i + 4j) - (6i - 2j)

P vector - 2Q vector = 2i + 4j - 6i + 2j

P vector - 2Q vector = -4i + 8j

Hope this helps you!

Thanks
