Let velocity of boat in still water x km/h

Let velocity of water y km/h

 \\  \\

then

velocity of boat when it move

upstream = (x-y)km/h

here upstream means against the direction of water so velocity of boat decreases.

 \\  \\

now, velocity of boat when it move downstream

(x+y) km/h

here downstream means boat moves in the direction of water. so velocity of boat increases

 \\  \\

according to question

16/x-y + 24/x+y = 6 .........(1)

12/x-y + 36/x+y = 6 .........(2)

 \\  \\

let 1/x-y = a and 1/x+y = b

we get

16a+24b = 6 and 12a +36b = 6

 \\

4a+12b = 3 and 4a+12b = 2

 \\

on solving by elimination

we get

a = 4 = x-y

and b = 12= x+y

 \\

or

x = 8 km/h = velocity or speed of boat

y = 4 km/h= velocity or speed of stream
