English is very idiomatic. You need to look at groups of words.’ It was a waste of time.’ (If you translate word for word, the sentence doesn’t make sense.)

English has phrasal verbs. The smell put me off my food. (Put off is a phrasal verb. There is often no connection between the vocabulary and definition.)

Meanings of phrases change because of one little preposition. (laugh at means something different to laugh with)

The spelling and pronunciation often have no connection: dough and toughare spelled almost identically, but have completely different sounds.

Day-to-day English is quite informal, but many people are taught formal academic English. This means that people often don’t hear/use what they learn.

All of these reasons can make learning English vocabulary difficult. The key is persistence. Don’t give up!
