Elected members are chosen either directly or indirectly by the people. In case of Indian parliamentary democracy we directly elect member of parliament for our loksabha constituency and these directly elected members choose their leader as the prime minister. So we can say that a Loksabha MP is directly elected while the prime minister is indirectly elected. Similarly the members of the upper house which is Rajyasabha are indirectly elected because they are elected by the members of state assemblies. President of India is also indirectly elected through preferential voting system.
Nominated members are nominee of the president in the house. In case of loksabha there is a provision to nominate not more than 2 members of anglo Indian community to represent their community. In case of Rajya Sabha 12 members are nominated by the president from different fields like art science literature Sports etc to bring expertise in the process of policy making. However these members are nominated on the aid and advice of the council of ministers.
There is a convention of exclusion of nominated members from the council of ministers although it is nowhere mentioned in the constitution.
