Thermite reaction is a type of single displacement reaction in which Aluminum being more reactive displaces another less reactive metal (eg. Fe2O3) from it's oxide to form Aluminum oxide and molten metal (Fe). This reaction is exothermic and a lot of heat is produced...

Al + Fe2O3 → Al2O3 + Fe (molten)

The reaction between iron oxide and aluminium is highly exothermic and the iron which is obtained is in the melted form.

This melted iron is used for joining railway tracks and cracked machine parts.

Tis reaction is known as thermit reaction.
