Let O be the centre of the circle of radius.

From O draw OD ⊥AB.

Then OD is the required distance.

∴ AD = DB = 2.5 cm (perp. from centre bisects chord) ∴ In rt. ∠d ∆ODB.

OD2 = OB2 – DB2 (Pythagoras Th.)

= (5)2 – (3)2

= 25– 9

= 16

∴ OD = √16 cm

OD = 4 cm
