 \frac{ \sqrt{3} \:  - 1 }{ \sqrt{3 \:  + 1} }  =  \frac{ \sqrt{3} \:  - 1 }{ \sqrt{3 \:  + 1} }  \:  \times   \frac{ \sqrt{3} - 1 }{ \sqrt{3} - 1 }

 \frac{( \sqrt{3}  - 1) {}^{2} }{( \sqrt{3}) {}^{2} - (1) {}^{2}   }  =  \:  \frac{3 + 1 - 2 \sqrt{3} }{3 - 1}

 \frac{4 - 2 \sqrt{3} }{2}  =  \:  \frac{2(2 -  \sqrt{3)} }{2}  =  \: 2 -  \sqrt{3}

so

2-√3. = a+b√3

2+(-1)√3 = a+b√3

a= 2

b= -1
