Charater Interaction:
The way characters interact with one another in a play is a very interesting and important aspect to consider when reading drama. This is because, when you think about it, the characters are created by the same author, and yet their mannerism and their personal qualities can be extremely opposite of one another. This is interesting and important because Shakespeare, as the playwright: an author of a play, must maintain these conversations and actions and be consistent with them throughout the entirely of the tragedy. This is not only true of Shakespeare, but of every playwright that ventures forth writing drama. The playwright, then, is essentially having conversations with different parts of themselves and trying to imagine a self that is separate from who they are in life. The different pieces of the “self” then become characters that interact on a stage with one another. You as the reader or audience must carefully consider the consistency: the continuance of a distinct personality in a character, in each character. There is room for progression where a character changes, or they can remain the same throughout the entirety of a play. I put it to you, a reader and audience member, to decide if Shakespeare was thorough in maintaining consistency in each of the characters of this tragedy. Please follow each of these steps and make sure you answer each part as carefully as you can. If you do, then you have successfully completed the assignment. Keep in mind, I am not looking for Competitive Dramatic or Theatrical skills. If you are someone who loves theatre and is able to do that, great, if your are not, also great. It’s not about acting, as much as it about reacting as a reader and participant in the story. Please answer this in 3-5 paragraphs, of seven full and complete sentences, and using textual references if you deem it necessary. Have fun with this!
Step 1: Think of any scene that you have read in any place in Romeo and Juliet. Think about your reaction to it, your feelings about it, and how you would have responded as a character on stage with your body, your face, and how it would relate to everyone on that stage with you. You can think of yourself as any major or minor character and the thoughts racing through your head at a given moment. Capture this and think about it as you move on to the next step.
Step 2: Explain why the moment you have chosen is significant and what the circumstances in the moment relate to. Many depictions of Shakespeare show modern takes on his work, so you can set this in our modern era, or you can imagine it back in the time of Shakespeare’s depiction. Whatever era you choose, think of your persona and explain how you as a major or minor character are responding. Write what is going through your head as you encounter each part of the conversation or event and why it is important. Lastly, explain what you think this shows about Shakespeare’s consistency.
Step 3: After you have done the first two steps, think about how your character would look in that moment. What facial expressions would they be making? What body language would they be projecting. How would your words match your body language and expression? Or, how would your words say one thing, while your body language showed another. It’s all about feeling! Finally, explain whether you feel Shakespeare was successful at showing different versions of himself in his work
