The length of the diagonal is the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle where the other two legs are 16cm and 12cm 

Therefore using Pythagoras's Theorem (the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides) 

Diagonal squared = 16^2 + 12 ^2 
Diag^2 = 256 + 144 
Diag^2 = 400 

Diagonal = square root 400 
Diagonal = 20 cm 

The answer is 20cm
