algal blooms are caused by blue-green algae, which are actually bacteria (cyanobacteria). Some algal blooms are the result of an excess of nutrients (particularly phosphorus and nitrogen) into waters and higher concentrations of these nutrients in water cause increased growth of algae and green plants.

preventive measure against algal bloom

Protecting soils from erosion and maintaining vegetation cover within a catchment will ultimately lead to better water quality as less sediments and nutrients will be able to enter waterways. Nutrients encourage the growth of blue–green algae, so reducing the nutrient inputs will reduce the frequency of algal blooms.

heya there!

a)

algal blooms (in freshwater) are due to excess nutrients like phosphate and nitrogen.
It affects the other creatures living in the water as it reduces the amount of oxygen.
the harmful algae releases toxins and kills the other organisms like fishes.

how does it reduce O2 in water?
Each alga is short-lived, and the result is a high concentration of dead organic matter which starts to decay. The decay process consumes dissolved oxygen in the water, resulting in declining of O2 in water..

b)

The excess of nutrients may originate from fertilizers that are applied to land for agricultural or recreational purposes, so we must reduce the use of fertilizers.

The industries that are aside the rivers and other water bodies release a large amount of toxins and some particular nutrient to the water. Industries should be started far away from the water bodies and residential areas.

programs to treat wastewater can be effective for reducing severe algal blooms at river mouths, estuaries, and the ocean directly in front of the river's mouth.

hope my answer helps you :)
