Questions:-

  1. 15/4 - 7x = 9
  2. The present age of Sahil's father is 3 times the present age of Sahil. After 5 years their ages will add to 66 years. Find their present ages.

Answers:-

1) 15/4 - 7x = 9

Transposing - 7x to RHS we get,

⟹ 15/4 - 9 = 7x

⟹ (15 - 36) / 4 = 7x

Now, transposing 7 to RHS we get,

⟹ (- 21/4) * (1/7) = x

⟹ - 3/4 = x

The value of x is - 3/4.

2) Let the present age of Sahil be x years and his father be 3x years.

Given that,

After 5 years, sum of their ages will be 66 years.

So,

  • Sahil's age after 5 years = (x + 5) years.

  • Sahil's father's age after 5 years = (3x + 5) years.

Hence,

⟹ x + 5 + 3x + 5 = 66

⟹ 4x = 66 - 5 - 5

⟹ 4x = 56

⟹ x = 56/4

⟹ x = 14

  • Present age of Sahil = x = 14 years.

  • Present age of Sahil's father = 3x = 3*14 = 42 years.
