Answer:

C.1. What are longitudes and latitudes

Ans- A latitude is a parallel lines of the global grid that runs from east to west. Eg: The equator.

A longitude are the vertical lines of the global grid that run from north to south. Eg: Prime Meridian.

2. Name some important lines of latitude.

Ans- Some important lines of latitude are:

  • Tropic of Capricorn
  • Equator
  • Tropic of Cancer
  • The Arctic circle
  • The Antarctic circle

3. What is the Prime Meridian?

Ans- The Prime Meridian is a line of Longitude in the global grid that which is defined as 0 degrees in a geographic coordinate system.

4. How many lines of latitude are there?

Ans- There are 181 lines of latitude on the global grid.

D.1. How do we find the location of a place on Earth?

Ans- We an find the location of a place on Earth by reading the coordinates of the latitudes and the longitudes. Latitude and longitude can be used to pinpoint a location. The position of longitudes and latitudes an be read as 41°E. For example, the absolute location of New Orleans, Louisiana, is 30 degrees north, 90 degrees west. Finding absolute location is the starting point for geographic research. Relative location is the relationship of a place to other places.

2. Who proved that the earth is spherical in shape?

Ans- It has actually been known that the Earth was round since the time of the ancient Greeks. It was believed that Pythagoras who first proposed that the Earth was round sometime around 500 B.C. He based his idea on the fact that he showed the Moon must be round by observing the shape of the terminator (the line between the part of the Moon in light and the part of the Moon in the dark) as it moved through its orbital cycle. Pythagoras reasoned that if the Moon was round, then the Earth must be round as well. After that, sometime between 500 B.C. and 430 B.C., a fellow called Anaxagoras determined the true cause of solar and lunar eclipses - and then the shape of the Earth's shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse was also used as evidence that the Earth was round.

3. Differentiate between Longitudes and Latitudes?

Ans- Latitude:

Direction East-west, parallel to the equator

Has Parallel Lines

0 to 90° North and South

Denoted by Greek letter phi (Φ)

All locations along a common latitude fall in the same hemisphere of the earth (northern or southern)

Denotes distance from equator (north or south)

Locations that share the same latitude do not necessarily fall into the same time zone.

Number of lines=180

Notable lines= Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn

Used for Classifying temperature zones

Longitude:

North-south; converging at the poles and widest at the equator

Parallel lines= No

0 to 180° East and West

Denoted by Greek letter lambda (λ)

Locations along a common longitude may be in different hemispheres.

Denotes distance from Prime Meridian (east or west)

All locations on the same longitude fall in the same time zone

Number of lines=360

Notable lines = Greenwich Meridian

Classifying time zones .
