Before 1990, India had been mostly ruled by Congress governments at both centre and state. As a result, most state governments were subservient to the central government. State governments under Congress rule mostly acted according to the wishes of the central government. Few state governments that were ruled by non-Congress governments were in constant threat of dismissal by the Centre.

After 1990 the state - centre relationship improved.

1) In 1990 many regional parties were established

2) It was an era of coalition government

3) No single party got the majority and hence they had to have a a coalition government .

4) The supreme court had taken this decision and was in favour and hence the centre could not dismiss the state in an arbitrary manner .

5) Thus it was a new era of power sharing between the state and the centre .

6) This was an effective government today than it was earlier.

Before 1990 in India centre state relation particularly ruled by Congress Government. They controlled political social economical administrative departments. There were many regionals parties also but Congress was the head and nationalized party over all. But after 1990 the situation was changed. Many parties came. So Congress lost their position, also different states have different Government. They control their areas.
