Let the present age of man be x years.

Let the present age of son be y years.

Given that sum of ages of man and his son is 45 years.

= > x + y = 45

= > x = 45 - y ------ (1)

5 years ago:

Age of man = x - 5.

Age of son = y - 5.

Given that 5 years ago the product of their age was 4 times the man's age.

= > (x - 5)(y - 5) = 4(x - 5)

= > (45 - y - 5)(y - 5) = 4(45 - y - 5)

= > (40 - y)(y - 5) = 4(40 - y)

= > y - 5 = 4

= > y = 9.

Substitute y = 9 in (1), we get

= > x = 45 - y

= > x = 45 - 9

= > x = 36.

Therefore,

The present age of man = 36 years.

The present age of son = 9 years.

Hope this helps!
